The DayShift Story: Why I Built a Better Focus Drink

Where This All Started

I graduated from the University of Texas and started my career in real estate. My days looked like this: up early, at the desk by 7, 300 cold calls before the day ended. Success on that floor was measured in one thing, and it was pace. If you could not hold pace, you could not hit the numbers. If you could not hit the numbers, you were out.

Holding that pace required stimulation. For me, that meant one of two things: prescription stimulants, or a ridiculous amount of coffee.

At some point I had to ask myself what was worse. Cycling through prescription stimulants I had to keep getting refilled, or drinking close to a gram of caffeine before lunch. Both had trade-offs. Neither felt like a long-term answer.

The 2 AM Moment

The night I actually decided to do something about it was around 2 AM on a Tuesday. I was sitting up in bed staring at the wall. Exhausted but completely unable to sleep, because I had had too much cold brew earlier that day trying to push through the workload. And I had another full workload waiting in the morning that I would somehow have to face on almost no sleep.

That was the moment it hit me that whatever I was doing was not sustainable, and I had to find something else.

I started reading that night. That is how I found mushroom coffee.

What I Tried First

Mushroom coffee was having a moment. The marketing was aggressive. So I bought some.

It tasted terrible. It was hot, which is a problem when your desk is already at 78 degrees. It was not portable in any real way. And most importantly, I did not feel anything from it. Days went by, then a couple of weeks, and I still could not tell whether it was doing anything for me. I later learned that most functional mushrooms in that category are dosed too low to do much of anything on the timeline the research actually supports. And I would eventually learn that even a well-dosed mushroom drink is not something you feel same-day. At the time, I just knew it was not working for me.

That was the moment I started thinking about building the alternative myself.

The Sales Floor Was the Test

Real estate cold calling is unforgiving. If you are tired, if you are unfocused, if you are irritable, the person on the other end of the phone can hear it in the first five seconds. And they hang up.

That environment made me obsessive about anything that might sustain focus without making me feel worse later. Every workaround I tried came with a cost. Stimulants worked for the day but I did not like what a full year of them looked like. Coffee worked in the short term but the crash between two and four in the afternoon was always waiting, and I was already borrowing against tomorrow's sleep to push through today.

I did not want a stronger version of what I was already doing. I wanted a different approach entirely.

The First Version Was Just Better Mushroom Coffee

I did not start with the full formula. I started with a better mushroom coffee. Cold instead of hot, because I hated hot drinks at a hot desk. Fruit-forward, because taste was the main reason I had quit every mushroom product I had ever tried. And higher-dosed on the mushrooms, because by then I had read enough to know that most mushroom coffees dose the functional mushroom component far below what the research actually uses.

I started bringing it to the office. People noticed. A few coworkers asked to try it. They liked it. Word spread. Within a few weeks, coworkers were paying me to make them a bottle every morning.

Most of them were already trying to cut back on caffeine. Some had already tried mushroom coffee themselves and quit for the same reasons I had. They liked mine because it actually tasted good and was easy to drink cold at their desks.

That was the proof of concept.

But Mushroom Coffee Alone Was Not Enough

I knew something my sales floor did not, which was that even a well-dosed functional mushroom drink is not going to make you feel much on the day you drink it. Functional mushrooms are researched primarily for effects that develop over weeks to months with consistent daily use, not for an immediate lift. That is why so many people who buy mushroom coffee expecting a next-day change quit it within two weeks.

If I wanted people to keep drinking this long enough for the mushrooms to do what mushrooms actually do, they had to feel something on day one. Same session. First serving. Otherwise the routine would fall apart before the compounding baseline could even start to build.

That is when I got serious about the rest of the formula.

A Year and a Half of R&D

I spent the next year and a half building the deeper version.

I read every study I could get to on nootropics and adaptogens. I taught myself what beta-glucans are and why they matter. I learned that liquid formats absorb faster than powders. I learned that most supplements in the space are underdosed relative to the research they cite. And I built toward a formula that could deliver a felt effect on day one from the acute ingredients while still supporting the compounding cognitive baseline the mushrooms are dosed for.

That two-part vision was the whole point. Something automatic. Something that helped you today AND helped you tomorrow, because the ingredients would be quietly building a higher baseline in the background while the acute ingredients handled the day in front of you. Something that did not force you to choose between performing now and being wrecked later.

The hardest part was not the science. It was the taste. Getting a formula with that many active ingredients to taste like something you actually want to drink every morning is a real problem. I ended up spending almost everything I had saved to bring in food and beverage scientists to solve it. That was the point when I knew I was fully in.

The Kitchen Grind

Once the formula was locked, I was back to making batches in my kitchen every morning and delivering them to coworkers. I was up at 5 AM prepping the day's orders before my own workday started. It worked for a while. Then it did not. There is a limit to how many bottles one person can hand-mix on a home counter before their day job stops functioning.

That was the point where I had two choices. Stop making it, or make it into a real company.

I made it into a real company.

What DayShift Is Now

DayShift is what came out of that year and a half of testing and the year of sales-floor demand that followed.

One packet of DayShift contains eight ingredients, fully dosed and fully disclosed: 120 mg of caffeine from green tea, 240 mg of L-theanine, 325 mg of lion's mane fruiting body and mycelium extract standardized to at least 70 percent beta-glucans, 200 mg of 8:1 cordyceps extract (equivalent to 1,600 mg of dried fruiting body), 800 mg of N-acetyl L-tyrosine, 300 mg of alpha-GPC, 250 mg of rhodiola standardized to 3 percent salidroside, and 200 mg of Panax ginseng. Manufactured in the United States at an FDA-registered, cGMP-certified facility. Third-party tested.

The formula reflects the two-part problem I was trying to solve.

The acute ingredients (caffeine, L-theanine, alpha-GPC, N-acetyl L-tyrosine, rhodiola, and Panax ginseng) were chosen to support focus, sustained energy, and mood the same day you drink it. That was the piece I needed on the sales floor. The piece that meant I did not have to keep pouring cold brews or filling prescriptions to get through a workday.

The mushroom component (lion's mane and cordyceps) is the long game. Functional mushrooms are studied for effects that develop with consistent daily use over weeks to months, not within a single session. They are in there for the compounding baseline that daily use is meant to support, not for an immediate lift.

Why "DayShift"

The name has three meanings, and all three are intentional.

It shifts your mind into the right frame for the day.

It is built for your day shift at work.

And it has the word "day" in it, because it is meant to be used every day.

The tagline that goes with it is "Fuel the day. Feel the shift." That is the sentence I would have wanted printed on the bottle in my sales floor days.

Who DayShift Is For

DayShift was built for the people I was working next to on that sales floor and the people I have met since. People who think for a living. People who cannot afford an off day. People who want to perform at a high level today without paying for it tomorrow.

If any of that describes you, DayShift was built with you in mind.

What's Next

The company is early. The product just launched. I am still involved in every part of it. I read the customer emails. I answer some of them myself.

Over time, DayShift will expand. There will be new flavors. There will be new products. But the core will not change. Every product we ship will be dosed at levels the research actually supports, formulated for people who take their work seriously, and priced at something a person can actually afford to drink every day.

That is the promise. That is what we are building.

Welcome to the shift.
